Ice or Heat:

Ice is used after an injury to stop the excess fluid & blood flow to the injured area to decrease any further swelling. The key to the therapeutic benefit is 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. Use ice if the area is hot to the touch, and within the first 48 hours of a muscle or tissue injury, strain or pull.

Heat is used to relax and sooth tissue that is tight or knotted. Heat will relax the area and increase the blood flow with nutirients needed to heal an injured area. With the relaxation of the tissue, the blood flow filters through the tissue and releases tension. Use heat on an area that is tight or sore, and only 48 hours after a muscle or tissue injury, strain or pull. Again, the therapeutic benefit time is 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. You want to affect the area, and allow the body to return to normal, then affect the area again.

The 8 hour heat patches are usually soothing to a tight and sore muscle area, and can help you get through the day or the night. But for therapeutic benefit and long term results, follow the 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off rule.
